About Group Psychotherapy

Group psychotherapy is a special form of therapy in which a small number of people meet together under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist to help themselves and one another. The therapy has been widely used and has been a standard treatment option for over 50 years.

If you stop and think about it, each of us has been raised in group environments, either through our families, schools, organized activities, or work. These are the environments in which we grow and develop as human beings. Group psychotherapy is no different. It provides a place where you come together with others to share problems or concerns, to better understand your own situation, and to learn from and with each other.

Group therapy helps people learn about themselves and improve their interpersonal relationships. It addresses feelings of isolation, depression or anxiety. And it helps people make significant changes so they feel better about the quality of their lives. Additionally, group therapists can apply the principles of group to other settings and situations such as businesses, schools and community organizations.

Group works! In studies comparing group psychotherapy to individual therapy, group therapy has been shown to be as effective and sometimes even more effective. In cases of medical illness, there is substantial evidence that this form of therapy helps people cope better with their illness, enhances the quality of their lives.
EMDR therapy is recognized as an effective form of trauma treatment in numerous practise guidelines worldwide. In the US, this includes organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association and Department of Defense. More than twenty randomized studies support the effectiveness of the therapy in the treatment of PTSD. Further, more than twenty randomized studies have demonstrated positive effects of the eye movements. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive, integrative psychotherapy approach. It contains elements of many effective psychotherapies in structured protocols that are designed to maximize treatment effects. These include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential, and body-centered therapies.

EMDR psychotherapy is an information processing therapy and uses an eight phase approach to address the experiential contributors of a wide range of pathologies. It attends to the past experiences that have set the groundwork for pathology, the current situations that trigger dysfunctional emotions, beliefs and sensations, and the positive experience needed to enhance future adaptive behaviors and mental health.
EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, famlies, and groups. EAP addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs including behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, PTSD, substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, relationship problems and communication needs.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. it is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address treatment goals. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term, or "brief" approach.

We are often asked, "Why horses? Why not other animals?" Naturally intimidating to many, horses are large and powerful. This creates a natural opportunity for some to overcome fear and develop confidence. Working alongside a horse, in spite of those fears, creates confidence and provides wonderful insight when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life.
Integrative Arts Psychotherapy uses the arts, metaphor and creativity, which can help to tap into hidden or unconscious feelings. This process can lead into a dialogue to discover a better understanding of the self. For this purpose the following is provided when and if appropriate:

• Paints, crayons and other art materials deliver an opportunity for allowing the inside landscape to emerge and to have a visual image to 'hold' on to.
• Puppets/Drama aid in a deeper understanding of relational interaction and the roles we play.
• Sand tray with miniatures allows for the possibility of re-enacting important life issues, which can then be considered with a sense of distance.
• Poetry/metaphor allows for a richer description of the feeling as opposed to a single word, which can be limiting.
• Moulding materials offer a three-dimensional image allowing clarity to emerge through the sensation of touch.
• Music has the ability to evoke powerful feelings whether joyful or sad.
• Movement is essential for change and so much is communicated through the body such as posture, gestures and illness.
